OK,
Since I can't come up with anything cool to write, I'll just post a sea story. I'll regail you of my experiences in Germany. During Operation Teamwork 92, we stopped in Wilheshaven, Germany. Myself and two buddies rented a car and headed to Hamburg to see some sights. We had now idea where we were going but wandered around the city until we reached what looked like a nice area. It was called St. Pauli, like the beer. We park and start walking around. We ran into some other shipmates hanging around a Burger King and decided to make it a central location to meet back up later. Anyway, my buddy and I are doing some shopping and notice this rather attractive looking woman wearing really tight pants, hip boots, very sexy. We raise our eyebrows and enjoy the scenery. We later meet back up at the Burger King and notice about a dozen women leaning against the wall dressed exactly the same was as above lady. And then it dawns on us. St. Pauli in Hamburg is the red light district.
Imagine that, a bunch of sailors on leave end up in the red light district. Who would have thought. It was the first time we'd been in a city where prostitution was legal. There were some interesting places. We took notice of a bunch of women in lingerie standing in the doorway of an establishment. One of the guys when to talk to them. (DISCLAIMER: I did not then, would not now, and never will have any sort of relations for money. Believe it or not, I have not been to a strip club since I began dating my wife, over 20 years ago, out of respect for her.) He found out that the "going rate" was $20 to go up to a room with one of the ladies. We found it suspicious that no one was in the club but the "ladies". We later found out (from another shipmate dumb enough to go up to the room) that $20 gets you to the room. Various "activities" were an additional charge. Having the "lady" remove clothing was also extra. He endend up spending over $100. Sucker.
The other unique thing there that I have not seen before or since was "window shopping". We noticed after dark that one of the streets was screen off. That is, you needed to go around a series of screens to go into this street so that it was not visible from the intersection. Being of curious natures, we decided to find out why it was blocked off. Of course, this was the street where ladies were sitting in the window awaiting customers. They would open an awning and you would negotiate services and cost. If one left the window with a customer, another would take her place. We browsed for a little while and moved on.
Once we'd left Germany, I was speaking with one of the personnel on watch with me who mentioned he had slept with one of these "window women". He was awfully proud of the fact he had done so. His comment was that he had slept with a beautiful woman. Of course, we had to remind him that since he paid her money, it's not like it was much of a challenge or anything. To top it all off, he paid over $100 to have sex with this woman, and she didn't even get undressed! That was extra and he didn't want to pay. She simply moved aside her panty to give him access, so to speak. Ah, a fool and thier money are soon parted.
That particular trip was quite fun, St. Pauli aside. We also visited Oslo, Norway and Portsmouth, England. Both were great countries to visit and no prostitutes were involved. I grew especially fond of England and hard cider. There is an authentic English pub here in Rochester (I mean it is run by students from England studying hostelry in college on an internship. Authentic English food, authentic pub atmosphere, and great cider on draft. And it's 3 blocks from where I work. Life can be good!
